Section 05
The visit-and-decide week
A practical sequence to turn three shortlisted homes into one decision in seven days.
Day 1 — Phone calls
Call all three. Ask about availability, fee schedule (request emailed PDF), licensing number, and whether you can visit unannounced. Cross off any home that can't or won't.
Days 2–3 — In-person visits
Visit each home, ideally between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. or during a meal service. Use the Section 3 checklist. Take photos with permission. Talk to a current resident if any are willing.
Day 4 — Reference call
Phone the family reference each home gives you. Ask: would you place your parent here again? What's the one thing you wish you'd known before signing?
Day 5 — Decide with siblings
Compare notes. Decide together. Put cost-share in writing if multiple siblings are funding.
Days 6–7 — Contract review and deposit
Read the contract slowly. Mark anything unclear and email back for written clarification. Pay deposit only after written confirmation of any negotiated points.
The first eight weeks after move-in
Visit more frequently than you plan to long-term. Check in weekly with the nurse manager. Expect adjustment difficulties in the first two to three weeks; most parents settle visibly by week four to six. Don't underweight this early period.
